The Perch

 The Perch Brentwood

I woke up at 9:03 this morning. Ordinarily I would have reluctantly roused myself from bed to the gym next door for an intense run or workout. I did not do that today though because I was going to eat at “The Perch” and I was excited. My mother, older brother and I rocked up to this trendy, stand out cafe far later than had been discussed the previous night. Nonetheless, the rich aroma of cinnamon, sugar and hot buttery batter was pure and powerful as I poked my nose into the doorway between matching coffee-brown window shades reading “crepes” and “espresso.” It’s certainly not unusual for a cafe to serve “espresso” but the crepes cooked every morning immediately “perch” this Brentwood business on a limb of it’s own.

Delicious Crepes

The comforting style and decorating of the off white walls of the interior bring a hip, casual feel to the room while pleasantly blending it with The Skin Bar next door. A chalk board style menu filled with everything from spinach to cinnamon will satisfy any degree of desire. I chose to fulfill multiple desires this morning. One was savory and one was sweet. I can still taste the hot ham and cheese melting in my mouth from my delicious bacon, egg and cheese crepe. The other crepe I ordered was a cinnamon and sugar crepe with apples, I must say this crepe was not the best I’ve ever had. The apples were stiff and sparse and there could have been more cinnamon to serve it’s sweet purpose. Nonetheless, it was a sweet crepe and I enjoyed it.

New Perch Location?

This small Brentwood creperie has successfully “perched” itself high on my list of Nashville area hangouts. I hope rumors of a Green Hills location are fully grounded in truth, and maybe a sign of future expansion – the U.S. needs to fall in love with crepes.  Do something different tomorrow morning. Wake up earlier and eat crepes. You’ll have a great day. Cheers.

Urban Grub Opening

24 Apr

Urban Grub opening this week adds a taste of Latin spice to 12 South neighborhood:

Urban Grub back in November

Urban Grub Menu:

“Urban Grub: Fish Pit and Southern Cantina is basically a Southern restaurant with Latin influences,” owner Jay Pennington said. “What you’d see in a Southern Urban city. A lot of ethnic influences on Southern food.”

Pennington is a veteran of the Nashville food scene, opening Bound’ry and South Street in the early 90’s, and more recently being involved with the popular Local Taco mini chain. He partners that experience with consultant chef Deb Paquette, who earned quite the name for herself around the table in Nashville as longtime owner of Zola’s restaurant. With Edgar Pendley as chef, they’ve wrapped fresh seafood, Charcuterie cured meats, steak and vegetarian offerings into one sweet Southern, “Pan-Gulf” menu.

The striking architecture of Urban Grub

The 4500 square foot building is made from primarily reclaimed materials. Pennington says they found the wood in some old sheds and the bar tops are made from all recycled wine and beer bottles and oyster shells. Much of this space is either outdoors are surrounded by retractable outdoors to give the restaurant a nice airy vibe in the warm days spring, summer and autumn. For winter nights there are numerous fireplaces around the restaurant including an open-faced fire oven.

Urban Grub will be another great new 12 South eatery

The dramatic design of Urban Grub has already created a buzz among members of the 12th South community.

“I’m really excited about it, it’s some really interesting architecture and it looks like it’s gonna be a great restuarant,” local homeowner Kevin Terry said. “It’s kind of a monument on 12th south, it’s probably one of the biggest buildings and I think it’s gonna be really popular.”

The building does give the impression of being a bit larger with its towering entry veranda and scattered exterior porches.

“It seems to be bigger but it’s really not. We’re about 4500 square foot on the roof. It feels bigger but our kitchen is in the center. We’ll seat about 160 people,” Pennington explained.

Construction has been underway since September 21 with the initial aim to open in December. Since then it has been pushed back to January, then February, Then March, and here we are in April, and Urban Grub should finally be opening this week and promises to be an interesting new eatery for Nashvillians.
